Unisa has launched a new postgraduate student network under the South Africa Sweden University Forum (SASUF), giving master’s and PhD students a formal platform to collaborate with Swedish counterparts on research, innovation, and shared global challenges.
The Unisa SASUF Student Network was launched on 13 July 2026 by the Directorate of Internationalisation and Partnerships in Unisa’s Department of Institutional Advancement (DIA). It brings together South African and Swedish students, researchers, and university leaders to work jointly on issues tied to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union’s Agenda 2030.
What the Network Offers Postgraduate Students
For Unisa postgrads, the network opens doors to:
- Joint research and academic collaboration with Swedish universities
- Participation in international projects and interdisciplinary hackathons
- Access to seminars, workshops, and conferences
- Mentorship and peer-to-peer academic support
- Hybrid and virtual collaboration models that make participation accessible regardless of location
Professor Boitumelo Senokoane, Acting Executive Director of DIA, used his welcome address to underline Unisa’s commitment to global engagement, encouraging students to build relationships beyond national borders and use the platform to freely exchange ideas and information.
Dr Angie Magabane, Executive Director of Internationalisation and Partnerships, described the launch as a milestone that sets up coordinators to champion the network’s goals going forward, with benchmarking and joint publication opportunities between Unisa and its Swedish partner institutions.
SRC Backs the Initiative
Tshegofatso Mmope, Secretary-General of the Unisa Student Representative Council (SRC), welcomed the network as more than a formality, calling it the start of a more connected postgraduate community where students can collaborate, mentor one another, and grow professionally. The SRC has committed to continuing to advocate for postgraduate interests through the initiative.

Andile Mthembu, National SASUF Student Network Coordinator, explained that SASUF exists to turn global insight into local impact, connecting South African and Swedish master’s and PhD students through sustainable leadership models and hands-on interdisciplinary projects.
Mpho Mahlangu, SASUF Student Network Chairperson at the Vaal University of Technology, told attendees the real measure of success won’t be the number of meetings held, but the number of students inspired and collaborations formed. He urged Unisa postgrads to stay curious and get involved early.
Who’s Leading the Network
Dr Mantepu MaseTshaba, Executive Dean of the College of Economic and Management Sciences, introduced the Interim Coordinating Team tasked with setting up governance, building international partnerships, and growing the network’s visibility. The national leadership includes:
- Siya Seme — Communication and Marketing Manager, Unisa KwaZulu-Natal Region
- Irma Thema — Academic Administrator, Unisa Graduate School of Business Leadership (SBL)
